Minister Julie Collins has advised that H5 avian influenza has been detected in two wild seabirds on Western Australia’s southern coast.

This is the highly pathogenic strain of the virus that has been circulating globally since 2021 and is the first detection in Australia.

While the virus primarily affects wild birds and poultry populations, some countries have reported instances of transmission from birds to other animal species, including dairy cattle, sheep, goats and pigs.

Information on H5 Bird Flu and Livestock can be found: www.dpird.nsw.gov.au/dpi/biosecurity/animal-biosecurity/avian-influenza/h5_bird_flu-and-livestock-industries

AgForce will continue to monitor developments and engage with government and industry stakeholders.

Producers are encouraged to remain alert and review farm biosecurity plans were required to ensure they are up to date.

Members who observe unusual disease signs should report concerns to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline 1800 675 888.
