Biosecurity

Keeping food safe

AgForce have formed a biosecurity committee, which is currently made up of the three commodity presidents, policy directors and two other passionate AgForce members. The Government  has written a new biosecurity act and is combining nine and a half acts into one. This was a large project and AgForce was part of the stakeholder group and provided comments and feedback on the legislation as it was drafted.

The act is currently before the parliamentary committee and it is estimated that the bill will be passed and in full effect by 2013. The next part of the process is working with Government about how the act will be implemented for example, developing codes of practice etc. AgForce will again be involved in the stakeholder group to provide comments and feedback.  The contact person for this is currently Nina Murray.

AgForce is happy with the exposure draft so far and believes it allows a lot more flexibility to deal with the ’unknown’, which was one of the limiting factors of the old/existing legislation.

The Queensland Government is only at the consultation stage - advising industry that they are going to be conducting the process. The next stage is what changes (if any) are required.

As the use of agricultural chemicals falls under biosecurity legislation, AgForce will play a leading role in the process to ensure any changes made are not to the detriment of our industry.
