Strategic cropping land

Strategic cropping land

In August 2010 the Queensland government committed to develop legislation that protects key food producing land in Australia. In 2011 the government delivered on this promise.

AgForce welcomed the move to protect prime cropping areas from mining and urban development, and has long advocated the importance of these iconic agricultural lands. AgForce continues to lead the focus to ensure the security of food production is not undermined by detrimental planning policies such as mining or urban encroachment.

Queensland has some of Australia’s best and most productive farm land, but it is a finite resource which must be conserved and managed for long-term sustainability. AgForce has taken a lead on this issue to ensure safeguards to protect such land from developments which undermine its productivity and environmental integrity.

The Queensland government defined strategic cropping land as land on which soil quality, topography and seasonal rainfall combined enable more than one quality crop to be grown on a commercial agricultural basis.

Draft trigger maps released identified around 4% of Queensland's land mass as having potential for strategic cropping, including areas from the Darling Downs, Central Queensland and into the Far North being eligible for possible protection.

AgForce made a submission to the discussion paper on strategic cropping land and with other sectors of the industry and government continues to set a framework to identify and provide a level of consistent protection for Queensland's cropping regimes and lands.
