Reef protection

On 1 January 2010, the Environmental Protection Act 1994 was amended by the Great Barrier Reef Protection Amendment Act 2009, enabling the Queensland Government to regulate certain activities on cattle grazing and sugarcane properties in the Burdekin Dry Tropics, Mackay-Whitsunday and Wet Tropics catchments.

Grazing properties

Restrictions have been placed on the use of herbicides containing the chemical tebuthiuron on grazing properties over 2000ha.

They include:
  • By 30 June 2010 the person applying or directly supervising the application must hold chemical training qualifications in the following competencies:
    - AHCPMG301A: Control weeds
    - AHCCHM303A: Prepare and apply chemicals
    - AHCCHM304A: Transport, handle and store chemicals

  • Or hold an unrestricted Commercial Operator’s Licence or a pilot chemical rating licence under the Agricultural Chemicals Distribution Control Act 1966.

  • Records of use on a DERM-approved form to be made within three days of use on cane farms over 70ha.
Sugarcane properties

New controls apply to the use of herbicides containing atrazine, ametryn, hexazinone and diuron. They include:
  • By 1 July 2010 the person applying or directly supervising the use must hold the following qualifications:
    - AHCPMG301A: Control weeds
    - AHCCHM303A: Prepare and apply chemicals
    - AHCCHM304A: Transport, handle and store chemicals

  • Or hold an unrestricted Commercial Operator’s Licence or a pilot chemical rating licence under the Agricultural Chemicals Distribution Control Act 1966.

  • Records of use on a DERM-approved form to be made within three days of use.

About the program

The SMARTtrain Chemical Application program is designed for those who use power-operated equipment or knapsacks to apply chemicals in agricultural.

This program provides successful participants with the following units of competency which fulfill the requirements of the Reef Protection Package legislations:

- AHCPMG301A: Control weeds
- AHCCHM303A: Prepare and apply chemicals
- AHCCHM304A: Transport, handle and store chemicals

Through completing this program you will learn how to limit risks through:
  • using the correct personal protective equipment 
  • reading and interpreting chemical labels
  • keeping accurate records and maintaining equipment
  • calibrating application equipment
Included is training on the safe transport, handling and disposal of chemicals, decontaminating equipment and what to do with used chemical containers.

The program shows you how to identify the risks that chemicals pose:
  • to market access for your products
  • to your safety
  • to the environment.
How can I obtain accreditation?

Chemical accreditation can be completed by correspondence or workshop.
