2001/2002 - AgForce Highlights, Activities and Key Achievements

  • Successfully lobbied the Federal Government to approve an interim drought assistance package for the Eastern Darling Downs

  • Effectively worked with the Queensland Department of Primary Industries on an application for exceptional circumstances for the Eastern Darling Downs which, after pressure from AgForce, was eventually granted by the Federal Government.

  • Produced the top-rating documentary Bulldust and Barbed Wire - the Big Paddock that ran on the prime time television during 'A World Around Us.'

  • Effectively lobbied for the establishment of the National Breeding Company for wheat research and development.

  • Successfully defended the Monsanto anti-dumping application against imports of glyphosate from China so saving grain growers hundreds of dollars each year.

  • Firmly established the Grain Harvest Management Scheme as a cost effective way of delivering grain off farm.

  • Played a major role in the success of the red meat promotion - which showcased beef and sheep meat products to consumers at the 2001 Royal Brisbane Show.

  • Co-ordinated a highly strategic lobbying effort with major livestock industry players to maintain Queensland Rail's livestock services.

  • Successfully lobbied to have State Government exclude mulga harvesting from under land clearing controls.

  • Supported an Augathella grazier in seeking funding from the Australian Farmers Fighting Fund to successfully defend a case against charges of illegal tree clearing where a permit had been issued.

  • Successfully teamed up with the Queensland Science centre to run the Future Farming competition for school students to raise awareness of the technology used on farms.

  • Re-activated the Drought Working Group with the Queensland Department of Primary Industries to facilitate new drought policy and work closely on current drought issues.

  • Developed a strategy for dealing with areas facing potential Exceptional Circumstances situations and continue to lobby for an overhaul of the entire process.

  • Led the debate and highlighted to government, the general public and landholders the growing crisis of wild dogs in Queensland and their devastating impact on the sheep and wool industry.

  • Maintained constant and high-level participation in the establishment of the new national wool representative body, Wool Producers.

  • Sought and gained an extension from the State Government for the completion of water infrastructure works across the Condamine/Balonne catchment area.

  • Secured a member-exclusive deal for 2000 tonnes of molasses from Gordonvale's Mulgrave Mill at a time when molasses was in short supply.

  • Continued to provide representation for landholders involved in Native Title claims throughout the State.

  • Ran a highly successful State Conference in Mackay in 2001 for 400 delegates.

  • Continued to manage the $800,000 two-year national research strategy on dung beetles.
